Bridging Discovery and Translation: Unlocking Interleukin-22 for Liver and Pancreatic Disease (129811)

Sumaira Hasnain 1
  1. Immunity, Infection and Inflammation Program, University of Queensland, Brisbane, QLD, Australia

Professor Sumaira Hasnain’s talk will highlight recent advances in understanding how inflammation and cellular stress drive liver disease, specifically Metabolic Dysfunction-associated Steatohepatitis (MASH)—a severe form of fatty liver disease characterised by inflammation and liver cell damage—as well as their roles in diabetes and pancreatitis. She will present preclinical data showing that IL-22 therapy reduces oxidative and ER stress in pancreatic and liver tissues, enhances insulin production, and reverses hyperglycaemia. The talk will also cover currently ongoing IL-22-based immunotherapies in clinical trials and her efforts to mitigate potential side effects. Through her spin-off company, Jetra Therapeutics, Prof. Hasnain has developed targeted, short-acting biologics that selectively act on the pancreas and liver, effectively preventing disease progression with fewer adverse effects. These findings open new possibilities for treating a range of pancreatic and liver diseases.
